Get into the Christmas spirit and celebrate New Year 2017 in Rotterdam. Here is some information about holiday events happening in Rotterdam Centre this year.
A 400 meter-long ice racing course and an 800m2 ice rink for playing and learning have been erected in the the city. Both are covered so you can enjoy the activity no matter the weather. For your convenience there are changing rooms, and skates can be hired from €5 or you may bring your own. For your enjoyment, there is a refreshments area where you can buy hot chocolate and erwtensoep (Dutch pea soup). You can even arrange private skating lessons. Please wear gloves as they are mandatory.
The rink is open until 1st March 2017 and the times are Monday through to Saturday from 9:00 until 22:00 and 9:00 until 20:00 on Sunday. Entry is €5.50 but for those who just want to soak up the atmosphere and not actually skate you can purchase a visitor’s card for just €2.50 which will entitle you to a free beverage. Please don’t send your children off to skate with cash in their little hands as payment is by PIN only.

From the 10th to 30th December is a covered Christmas Market in the Ahoy. The market is only open during performance times. Entrance is free for ticket holders of performances between this period otherwise you will have to pay an entrance fee. Please see website for details.

From the 24th until 30th December you can soak up the magical atmosphere of the circus at Ahoy. It is the oldest in The Netherlands and last year attracted around 35,000 spectators. The performance lasts around 2½ hours and has a live orchestra and top acts from Europe.

TWO ROTTERDAM CHRISTMAS TREES
The Christmas decorations in Rotterdam’s shopping streets are looking splendid and this year there are two huge Christmas trees in Rotterdam centre. One stands on the square outside Centraal Station and the other outside the Stadhuis on the Coolsingel.

On old year’s night you are invited to welcome in the New Year with thousands of other Rotterdammers along the Boompjeskade. Festivities kicks off at 22:30 with music, free oliebollen (a kind of deep-fried donut) and an illuminated boat parade along the Maas River. The firework display on the 800 meter-long Erasmusbrug begins at 00:00 and is being described as “the largest and most impressive firework display in The Netherlands”. Or, if you don’t want to leave the warmth of your living room, watch it live on RTL.
The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing a New Year’s Concert on the 6th and 8th January. All visitors to this “bubbling concert” are being treated to a glass of prosecco and an oliebol.
