Nancy waited for her child to be born in Gouda. The baby turned in her stomach and eased a stitch towards birth. She looked forward to gently pinching the soft brown flesh, caressing the dimpled thighs, and falling in love again with love, joy and hope. Nancy ignored the frolicking Zwart Piet, a most ungainly mahogany color of person, depicted on the retro post cards on sale at the bookstore’s cash register while she paid for her gifts and focused her attention instead on the warm hearth and happy seasonal festivities.
