Fun and Prizes at the International Women’s Club of Mexico City’s General Meeting

February 13, 2017

The Angloinfo Blog Team joined the IWC’s General Meeting held in Union Church. Here is an account of the meeting and the fun activities that took place.

On Friday 11th February, the International Women’s Club of Mexico City held their first General Meeting of the year. It was an opportunity for old faces to catch up, and new faces to introduce themselves and become a part of the organization, which hosts fun events and charity activities for its members.

Several vendors were present and a flurry of buying took place before the meetings themselves. These included Kimberley’s Cupcakes, DM Platería Silver Jewelry,  Vayu Bags, Le Caméléon Chocolates and of course not forgetting Adoptame Pet Rescue with their cute puppies up for adoption! The Reforma Athletic Club were also present to talk about the facilities at their club. Arturo Guzzi, piano and guitar teacher, provided the music during this time.

The IWC took to the stage to officially start the meeting and make several announcements. The greatest change this year has been the rebranding of the group, formally known as the Newcomers Club of Mexico City, and now the International Women’s Club of Mexico City. The reason for the new name was to reflect the group’s members, many of whom are no longer newcomers to the city, but living in Mexico City for a couple of years, several years, or permanently. Membership of the IWC costs MXN $800 per year, and you can sign up here.

An important part of the meeting was discussing the IWC’s philanthropic work, which is extensive. There are several opportunities for members and non-members to get involved with their work, which includes (and is not limited to!) visiting an orphanage, holding lunches for senior citizens and knitting hats for newborn babies in Mexico City’s hospitals. Their biggest fundraising event, a huge garage sale held at Union Church, will take place on May 19th. The audience were asked to make this a grand success by donating clothes and other items, as well as volunteering the day before and on the day.

The IWC events team then took to the stage to talk about their upcoming events, which include several weekly groups such as knitting and Spanish conversation classes, onto their ‘one-off’ events, such as a Valentine’s potluck and a chilli cook-off. Angloinfo lists all of the IWC’s events on our website, so keep an eye out for them.

Those in attendance were invited to nominate future board members, including a new President and other key roles such as Communications, Events, and Charity Activities. The audience were also welcome to express their interest in joining the committees that get together with the board members to discuss the group’s activities. It was stressed that however much time you have to give and however deeply you want to be involved with the IWC and its running, there was a role available and any help given was hugely appreciated! Elections for the board members will take place at the next General Meeting on April 28th 2017.

The announcements ended with a raffle and the winners were awarded a bag with their prize – these ranged from bilingual cookbooks produced by the IWC, family day passes for the Reforma Athletic Club, jewellery and cupcakes, amongst others. Even the beautiful flower arrangements on each of the tables were auctioned off!

Thank you to the IWC for inviting us, and we´ll see you next time! Visit the International Women’s Club of Mexico City’s website.
