Health: It’s the little things

Time for an immune system shake-up!

Spring is calling us all to action! Today I got up to the sound of summer music pouring out of the window from across the street. A few people on their balconies watering plants. Another lady feverishly cleaning her windows. People walking along the street wearing only jumpers….the freedom of no jacket! The birds singing and the sky blue.

Living in Berlin really makes one appreciate the seasons! It feels like the dark shroud of winter and illness is lifting and hope is flying around in the air all around us!

But before we dive into the hope and carefree spirit of spring, lets recap the state of Berlin’s health this past winter.

The start to winter at the end of last year was gentle and mild. But January and February certainly made up for it. Serious and long-lasting cases of influenza (in kiddies and adults), stomach bugs, as well the threat of measles (fear) were some of the hot topics in my practice.

So the focus these last few months was on acute illness  – i.e. those illnesses that have a definite start, and a definite end (unlike the vague on-set of chronic problems that never seem to have a clear end). Although for many, these acute illnesses were really difficult to cope with, it is not all doom and gloom. If we look at the bigger picture, we see how theses acute illnesses, especially those accompanied with fever, are the organism’s way of clearing out toxicity and throwing off the build up of imbalances.

What I often see, is that those people who are able to get through their acute illnesses without suppressing the symptoms by using antibiotics or fever reducing medication, will often enjoy the benefits later on with less chance of suffering from chronic problems later in the year (depression, auto-immune illnesses, allergies etc.). And children who are treated naturally without suppression, find that their long-term level of health is also given a big boost. Over time when children are treated naturally as much as possible, where antibiotics are given only as they should be i.e in emergencies, then the likelihood of developing serious chronic illness later on in life is often reduced. This is something that a lot of parents do not know! And even if they do, they often don’t have the health support needed when the acute bugs do come flying!

At any rate, the majority of the serious acute illnesses are now on the wane, which means its time to start building up immunity for the rest of the year. The best way to do this it to go to a therapist who can give you invidualised health treatment. We all have different tendencies and weaknesses. But here are some general immune strengthening remedies to build yourself and your family up again:

  • Echinacea tincture – 10 to 20 drops in water, twice a day
  • Propolis – 5 to 10 drops in water, twice a day
  • Vitamin C – 500 to 1000 mg per day
  • Chlorella powder –  2 to 15 grams per day
  • Omega 3 essential fatty acids – 500 to 1000 mg of EPA and DHA per day.

* Please note that although these dosages are generally meant for adults, they still might not suit you even if you are an adult. Its better to seek professional help, just to be sure.

Other important things to pay attention to are of course getting a lot of the good things such as lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, fresh air, exercise and enough sleep. Also doing a spring fast to reboot your system can be of great benefit.
